Long-time Cairns resident Ron Van Der Plight is an established artist and his vibrant, evocative artwork is collected locally and internationally.
He paints from the heart in a joyful yet cohesive style, and his work displays the hallmarks of his diverse and cosmopolitan influences.
Ron’s bold brushstrokes reveal a contemporary and confident style, and his quirky and sometimes unexpected use of colour adds
vibrancy to his unique works. Whilst heavily influenced by his surroundings, and the colours and textures found in North Queensland,.
Born in Amsterdam in 1944, Ron migrated to Australia with his parents in 1950.  Educated in Melbourne, he excelled in his favoured
subject – art – sowing the seeds of a style that has evolved to encompass both classic and modern influences. Leaving school at 17,
Ron pursued a part-time course in Art Practice at Caulfield Technical College, further honing his skills and personal development as an artist.
When the travelling bug bit, Ron headed to Europe in 1970, basing himself in Amsterdam for two and a half years and immersing
himself in his Dutch heritage. He travelled extensively, visiting every prestigious gallery in Europe and absorbing inspiration from the contemporary artists.
After a second extended stint in Europe, in 1978 Ron returned to Australia to settle permanently with his partner in Sydney.
They took the courageous step of opening a gallery/Bistro on Sydney’s lower north shore, which they successfully operated for 11 years.
The gallery exhibited and sold Ron’s own work as well as providing a platform for other emerging artists of Sydney. Ron hosted many
collective exhibitions at his gallery space, and became something of a mentor to the less experienced artists.
Whilst in Sydney, Ron found a niche in the area of corporate décor. He enjoyed success with his innovative concept of
leasing his work on a rotating basis in order to match the décor of offices and hotel foyers, as well as selling many pieces outright.
In 1988 Ron and his partner hit North Queensland and never looked back. On the back of his success in Sydney, they established a
business providing unique display themes for corporate and product launches, including painted backdrops,
set props and ‘papier mache’ design works.
A familiar face on the Cairns art scene, Ron worked in, and subsequently managed, the well-known Peter Lik fine art photographic gallery for several years.
Over the past four years, Ron has nurtured his interest in contemporary aboriginal art - from which he draws great inspiration for his
own work - and has become a respected local authority in the genre. A member of the Cairns Art Society, Ron regularly exhibits his work in
community art exhibitions in the region.
